I Pagliacci (Nedda) by Leoncavallo
October 23, at 8:00pm & October 25, at 2:00pm
Ohio Theatre in Columbus, Ohio
Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci, tells the tragic story of a traveling troupe of actors who perform a play throughout the course of the opera. Nedda (Robin Follman), Canio’s (Grant Youngblood) wife, is having an affair with Silvio (Sean Anderson). Tonio (Roy Cornelius Smith), in love with Nedda, reveals this to Canio, who must decide how to make the show go on while dealing with a broken heart. Unfortunately, the action of the play mirrors that of Nedda and Canio’s relationship and tragic consequences ensue as theatre and real life blur in this verismo shocker.
Sung in Italian with English supertitles, the opera will be directed by William Florescu, conducted by William Boggs and accompanied by the Columbus Symphony Orchestra.
“Her peasant dress, as bright red as a shiny apple, would make Nedda (Robin Follman) stand out in any crowd. But at this moment in ‘Pagliacci,’ stretched out on her back singing as she stares up at the sky, it’s as if she actually burns white-hot...a few minutes later, Nedda will stretch out on stage to share a kiss with her paramour (Jeff Mattsey)–imagine, getting horizontal in a prim-and-proper opera! –and, thanks to the pair’s fiery presence and palpable passion, you can almost feel the heat.”

'Grapes' ripe with essence of Steinbeck
“Composer Ricky Ian Gordon has merged Broadway and opera in his outstanding production of the classic American novel.
"Grapes of Wrath" works not because it is true to Steinbeck's style but because it honors his spirit. The story, of a Dust Bowl family displaced from its failing Oklahoma farm and of the family's dispiriting flight to California, is the classic refugee plight that continues to be played out globally. Steinbeck's Joads could be illegal Mexican workers in the U.S., victims of Hurricane Katrina or Asians and Africans sold into the international slave trade. They could be among those from 60 different nations, stateless, temporarily living in a refugee camp outside Vienna.” By Mark Swed, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
